Where it all began
For as long as I can recall fantasy has been an imminent part of my life. It came to me first through my dad’s childhood-into-adulthood obsession with Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and telling stories (he has been the game master for his D&D group since before I was born.) I vividly remember me and my sister sitting on his stomach begging for one of his stories about Princesses, dragons and magical worlds. The stories grew and adapted as the years went on, when my brother was born stories about a school for princesses and princes became our favourite, and listening to the adventures and pranks they pulled on each other are some of my fondest childhood memories.
Although my siblings soon outgrew the story-times (and we became much to big to sit on my dad’s stomach), I did not want to let go of the stories, instead I lost myself in books. Through the years I’ve obsessively consumed books in all genres, but my unwavering love for fantasy never faltered. In tandem I loved writing more than anything through my life I’ve continuously written books and short stories, but I never considered sharing them with the world—they were my escape into imagined worlds.
Cut to adulthood, I decided to study directing and acting. In the world of theatre and film I did not only get to create imagined worlds I got to make them a reality. And I loved every moment of it, unfortunately I quickly realised that it was not a viable career, and not an industry I could see myself being part of for the rest of my life. So instead I pivoted into a corporate job, although it might seem like a resignation of dreams, I’m actually freer now than I’ve ever been in my life. I have stability and financial security in a job that actually is writing (editorial writing). And with the good work-life balance I have I was once again able to write fiction, which is what led me to writing ‘The Prince in the Sky’.
The Prince in the Sky and how it came about
As mentioned I have always been something of a book-devouring being, but I reached a point where I was no longer satisfied by what I was reading. I found myself searching for something in every synopsis and in every review I saw on TikTok. I wanted a fantasy book that was beautifully written, with an interesting world, rich history, culture and back story, with political intrigue but also a strong romantic subplot that didn’t just dwindle after the first two books. And every time I picked up a new book, thinking this would be the one to scratch that itch, the disappointment was so palpable when I inevitably realised that it did not. And in this frustration the idea for ‘The Prince in the Sky’ was born. I wanted to create the perfect book (for me that is) and I believe that I have achieved that. There is a rich history, high stakes, intriguing world building concepts, characters with much to loose and of course a romantic sub plot with plenty of plot twists.
What is next?
I frequently get asked when this book will be available and truthfully I wish I could answer this question. I am currently preparing to find an agent and hopefully one day sell my book to a publishing house.
